Jun. 8th, 2005 04:10 pmLilly is sitting in Veronica’s bedroom, not panicking. She’s tried the door about a hundred times and it’s stubbornly refusing to lead her anywhere but here. So, yeah. Not panicking.
At least Pete got back, she thinks, even if he’s probably freaking out right now.
There are voices in the hallway, upset and hurt and then Veronica pushes into her bedroom and slams the door.
“Veronica, you’re okay…” Lilly trails off. Oops. She’d gotten used to people being able to hear her in Milliways, but she’s not there anymore. So Lilly is silent while her best friend changes from her gasoline-smelling clothes, pulls on pyjamas, crawls into bed and is asleep almost before her head touches the pillow.
Lilly hesitates, for a moment, but if she’s stuck here anyway… She closes her eyes, goes to that place in her mind where the borders blur and steps over.
When she opens her eyes, she and Veronica are lying on floating chairs in a beautiful blue pool. They're wearing matching pink bikinis and surrounded by lillies. It's so peaceful and Lilly's so happy she doesn't want to speak.

It's Veronica who eventually breaks the silence.*
"Isn't it better, like this?"
"So much better," Lilly replies lazily.
"This is how it's supposed to be," Veronica says firmly.
"Totally," Lilly agrees, basking in the sun.
"This is how it's gonna be. From now on." Lilly doesn't answer, her happiness slipping away. "Right? Lilly?"
Lilly sighs deeply. "You know how things are gonna be now, don't you? You have to know."
"Just like this," Veronica says, and the hope in her voice is breaking Lilly's heart. "Just like this."
"Don't forget about me, Veronica," Lilly says. She smiles at her best friend, and then closes her eyes because if she stays here like this one more second she'll try to stay forever.
As Lilly leaves Veronica to float alone in the pool, she hears her voice one last time.
"I could never," Veronica says, and Lilly knows this is true.
And then she's gone from the pool, but still in the Dreaming and there are tears rolling down her face and it's over, now, but she has a choice to make.
Lilly is still for a long, long time, and then finally she stands up, picks a direction, and starts walking.
