Jun. 11th, 2006 04:49 pmThe easiest way to get to Neptune isn't the front door anymore. It's- well, there is no easy way, not even through the Dreaming. She won't go to Veronica or Logan, not for this, and that leaves Lilly with only two options. She chooses the one who didn't kill her.
Okay, Clarence Wiedman's still not her favorite person, but he's not responsible for her death. Just the cover-up. Duncan had told her that he'd barely had to suggest their plan before the head of Kane Software security had declared himself more than willing to execute it.
"I think he might have been considering it anyway, Lil," Duncan had said. "I think he feels like he failed us or something."
Clarence Wiedman does not look like he has any intention of failing them tonight. Lilly, her hands clenched at her side to keep herself from touching the blood on her forehead, follows him from the nondescript car to a back entrance of the Neptune Grand. He spends mere seconds at the lock and slips inside easily, making straight for a service stairway that no one's using until the mysteriously blown fuse can be fixed.
Aaron Echolls is alone in the room when Clarence enters, moving nearly as silently as Lilly does. She stiffens at the sight of him. His shoulders are bare, his head cocked to one side, and she can just see the too-pleased smile on his face as he watches himself on television, even with his back to her.
"Well, well, well." Aaron chuckles, shifting his cigar to his free hand. "Who's that handsome fellow?"
A brief look of disgust passes over Clarence's impassive face and he lifts the silenced gun. Lilly's fingernails would be drawing blood from her palms if her blood could still flow.
Aaron's blood flows just fine. Spurts, really, covering the screen and the image of his younger self with a splash of bright red. Lilly takes a few tentative steps around the sofa to look into the face of her killer. She thinks, vaguely, that she should feel pity for him. He's dead, he can't hurt her or anyone she loves anymore. She should be the better person or something.
But as she looks into his once-handsome face, now covered with blood dripping from the hole in his head, all she can think is It looks good on you, asshole.
Clarence leaves nearly as quickly as he came, stopping only to remove the tapes from the security cameras and to make a phone call. Lilly can hear, faintly, her brother's voice.
"CW?"
"It's a done deal," Clarence responds. Lilly smiles, a little, because... he's right.
Her business in Neptune is done.
